Campbell Newman's rumoured return leaves ALP unmoved

RUNNING against Campbell Newman would not change the way Labor candidate for Brisbane Pat O'Neil campaigns.

Mr O'Neil was preparing to run against current LNP MP Teresa Gambaro who announced on Wednesday she would not be standing for re-election.

Pat O'Neill has won preselection for the ALP for the federal seat of Brisbane. His mother was a teacher at Woorabinda. His Facebook account says he is originally from Maryborough and he is an Army major who helped the Bundaberg 2013 Flood clean up.

He said he was surprised Ms Gambaro has decided not to run and was even more surprised when he saw Mr Newman's name mentioned as a potential replacement in the media.

"It was absolutely unexpected that Teresa is retiring and she won't contest the next election," Mr O'Neil said.

"But it doesn't affect the campaign we'll be running."

Mr O'Neil said although Mr Newman was a divisive figure in Queensland he was still planning to campaign on the issues.

"It doesn't matter if it is Teresa Gambaro or Campbell Newman or anyone else," he said.
