Cancer sufferer's campaign for care

A BREAST cancer sufferer living on the Gold Coast is campaigning for a greater focus on breast care.

The woman, who wished to keep her identity confidential, said she was one of many women diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia each day.

She said she has experienced difficulty when seeking medical attention after undergoing a mastectomy.

“I underwent a mastectomy in February and I suffer from a build-up of fluid in the scar tissue where my breast was removed. This means I have had the fluid drained approximately twice a week,” the woman said.

“On Easter Monday I awoke with an enormous fluid build-up.”

The woman said she contacted many medical institutions on the Gold Coast and was unable to find a facility to have the fluid drained.

“I don't want to experience anything like this again and I most certainly wouldn't want any other women to have similar or worse problems and have absolutely no assistance available to them.”

Gold Coast Cancer Support Sisters spokeswoman Jo Chapman said breast cancer suffers should seek the help of a support group.

Ms Chapman said while the group does not offer medical advice they are a shoulder to lean on when facing a daunting diagnosis.

“There are many people suffering from breast cancer on the Gold Coast, we have at least 45 people at our support meetings each month.”
