Candidates call in a heavyweight
FORMER Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was at Banora Point this week to help launch the Labor Party's bid to get representation on the Tweed Shire Council.
Michael Armstrong and Reece Byrnes are the Labor candidates for the Tweed Shire Council elections in September.
Mr Rudd said the candidates were Tweed people and had strong connections with the community.
"What I do know for any council to function effectively you need balance," Mr Rudd said.
"We need mainstream community representation."
Mr Armstrong used the opportunity of a full room at The Salvation Army Tweed Centre to attack the council.
"We need a council who understands the challenges of the future," Mr Armstrong said.
"We will make sure locals will get real value for their rates."
Tweed Shire Mayor Barry Longland said it was not for him to comment on the launch of Labor's campaign.
