Candidates tackle the tough questions

MY Daily News posed the questions you wanted answered to the three candidates fighting for the seat of Richmond.

National's candidate Matthew Fraser, Green's candidate Dawn Walker and current member Justine Elliot answered Bilambil Heights resident Julie Hall's questions.

Ms Hall asked "when will Kennedy Dr be a half decent road and when will Bilambil have sewage?"

"We're only ten minutes from the Gold Coast," she said.

She further asked when Bilambil's bus service would be back.

Mrs Elliot laid the blame at the feet of Tweed's State representative Geoff Provest.

"I can't be the Federal member and do the job of the State Member at the same time," she said.

"But I will continue to publicly highlight important issues and make representations to the State Government on behalf of local residents."

She said $1.3 billion of funding for roads, schools, health and community resources had been delivered by her.

Mr Fraser said it was not a federal issue but he understood the frustration Mrs Hall felt, especially when it came to Kennedy Dr.

"I live at Bilambil Heights and therefore use Kennedy Dr every day," he said.

"I understand how bad the road really is.

"Although a council issue, under the Federal program Roads to Recovery, I am seeking funding for Kennedy Dr to be resurfaced as per the section completed last year."

Ms Walker agreed Kennedy Dr was a big issue.

"Locals have been telling me how frustrated they are with Kennedy Drive, so you are not alone with your concerns," she said.

"I understand that Tweed Shire Council is working with residents to improve this situation.

"Unfortunately, without a good integrated public transport system in the Tweed, we rely heavily on needing regular and expensive road upgrades to accommodate increasing car traffic."

All of the candidates pointed out the questions should be directed to State Government representatives.

Ms Walker was the only candidate who looked into the question about the bus service.

"I spoke to Surfside bus lines and they advised me that bus route 608 travels from Tweed City to Bilambil Heights," she said.

"If you live in Bilambil village I can understand you would be frustrated by the service stopping on the hill.

"In my experience, Surfside is open to residents' suggestions of new routes and I encourage you to contact them about this matter.

"I hope this is of some assistance in the short term."

She said if she was elected to Parliament she would work hard to improve the public transport options in the region.

Bilambil's sewage issue was also something Ms Walker investigated further.

"There is nothing worse than not feeling confident with your community's sewage system and I remember last year a Bilambil couple had the awful experience of raw sewage coming into their home," she said.

"I have spoken to Tweed Shire Council about this matter and they explained that in February this year they opened a new $35 million wastewater treatment plant which will service Tweed Heads, Banora Point, Terranora and Bilambil Heights."

Mr Fraser said it was a council issue.

Mrs Elliot said  sewerage upgrades and public transport are all the responsibility of the State Government.
