Canny trailer makers stay on top of game
STUART and Jenny Daniels and their team at Beerwah-based Trailers 2000 have thrown down a unique challenge to other loud and proud Aussie manufacturers.
Their Aussie Made Challenge asks: Can you build your product in the shape of Australia?
With the hangover of Australia Day celebrations still in the air, Stuart seeks to inspire other home-grown companies in 2015 and encourage determined, hardworking Aussie businesses to keep Australia working, growing and staying strong.
Through the Aussie Made Challenge, he wants the world to know Australian manufacturers make wonderful products.
And while they might be doing it tough, they're doing their best to be innovative, competitive and successful.
The Trailers 2000 staff has built what is believed to be a world-first box trailer in the shape of Australia and even produced a videoclip to show us how it was done.
Now the team wants others to take up the challenge and produce pizzas, biscuits, chairs, tables, coffee art - anything in the shape of Australia.
From little things, big things grow, and no one knows that better than Stuart.
In 1993, he and Jenny were both unemployed with four small children to feed.
They had an idea and decided to start their own business and have a go.
So with a government New Enterprise Incentive Scheme grant and a spirit of determination, they opened their business in a backyard.
The company now builds a range of box, car, tandem, camper, enclosed and tradesmen's trailers, and takes custom-made orders.
In the video, Stuart explains the impetus to create a business that not only would support his family, but also have longevity.
"We wanted something better for our family so we eventually worked up the courage to start a business that was Trailers 2000," he says. "We love what we do, we love the business, we love manufacturing and we're fighting the good fight for manufacturing.
"We, like many manufacturers, are up against it with the problems we have with imports, but we're just getting smarter about the way we do business and the way we manufacture."
The Daniels are proud that Trailers 2000 is the largest manufacturer of its kind in Australia, and last year won two Telstra Business Awards (Medium Business Award and Regional Award).
Their galvanised trailers are the choice nationwide of Bunnings Warehouses and others.
