13-year-old girl critical after horror hit-and-run

A TEENAGE girl is fighting for life after being struck by a car while riding her bike in Melbourne's north.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives and Fawkner Highway Patrol members are appealing for public assistance following the hit-run incident involving a 13-year-old cyclist in Coburg.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known.

"It is believed a female teenager had been riding her bike when she was struck at the corner of Bell and Sussex streets just after 8pm," she said.

The girl was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the car, believed to be a dark-coloured BMW, stopped briefly before leaving the scene.

Investigators believe the vehicle will have damage to the left hand side and front windscreen.
