Carving up the Coast

Dave Winchester and a host of professional bodyboarders will be shredding up Duranbah tomorrow, providing demonstrations and advice for local carvers.

The world No.2 and his crew are running a free demo-day, which they say is Australia’s largest, to help raise the profile of bodyboarding in a surfing mecca.

Event organiser Ben Oborne hopes for good conditions, and expects a healthy turn-out.

He believes it is a great opportunity for youngsters to learn from some of the world’s best.

“It should be a great day,” he said. “We’ve got heaps to do, and a heap of board suppliers and pro bodyboarders on hand to help out.

“We had over 100 people turn up for the event last year and we expect a pretty good turnout again on Sunday.”

With the success of a number of talented locals who will be attending the demo-day, bodyboarding’s profile in the area is on the rise.

Gold Coast bodyboarding club memberships tripled over the past year, and more sponsored events are being held across the Coast.

That makes this a great time to get involved in the sport.

“We’re seeing a lot more young kids getting involved in the sport, and that’s great for the future of bodyboarding,” Oborne said.

Other high profile names like Chris James, Ryan Hardy, and Ewan Donnachie will also be making an appearance.

The session runs from 8am- 2pm (DST).

And of course that’s just one of the surf-based activities on the Coast this weekend, with Kirra SurfStock, which launched on Thursday, getting into full swing on the weekend, with the junior teams event today.
