Casuarina Beach to make senior rugby push
CASUARINA Beach Rugby Club will look to bring rugby union back to the Tweed, with a proposal being formalised to enter a senior side into a competition for next season.
The proposal comes on the back of the dissolution of the Murwillumbah Rugby Union Football Club, which withdrew from competition in May.
The Barbarians, who have a long history in rugby’s junior ranks, will hold a meeting at the Cabarita Beach Bar on Monday, July 25, at 7pm to discuss forming a senior side in 2017 and beyond.
Club president Brian Laybutt said the meeting would allow the club to determine the level of playing interest while putting the club’s case forward.
“There’s a lot of enthusiasm about starting a club and we want to say to people thinking of coming, ‘here’s the people who’ll be involved’,” Laybutt said.
“We’ll be looking to put a proposal forward at the first meeting showing how administration would work and what we want to happen.
“We’d be looking at getting a working party together to actively recruit coaches, players and sponsorship, who would meet on a regular basis to analyse components.”
Laybutt said that if a Senior team was to be formed, it would run in conjunction with the current Casuarina Junior Rugby Club, using the same grounds and facilities.
He said while it was early days, there was a high sense of optimism, with a number of strong coaches, ex-players and administrators already involved with the club.
“We have people who have coached at international level, ex-NSW Waratahs and people with a wealth of experience who want to put back into grassroots rugby,” he said.
“It’s small steps to start with as people are hesitant, but we want to see that a club can be sustained and competitive.”
All potential players, sponsors and those interested are encouraged to attend the July 25 meeting.
