Cattle prices almost double: Agent

CATTLE markets continue to ride the wave of positivity, as agents predict prices will continue to climb to record highs in the coming weeks.

Saturday's special George and Fuhrmann breeders sale attracted as many as 400 head of cattle, with prices continuing to skyrocket off the back of better weather conditions and stronger demand.

George and Fuhrmann livestock agent Matthew Grayson said the current state of the market was "foreign territory" for everyone, with prices close to double what they were before Christmas.

"We've never seen the market like this - I can't see things getting any cheaper," he said.

"I would say it's because of the seasonal conditions and the fact the fat cattle market is so strong."

Demand was high for yearling steers, with Mr Grayson describing the market as "very strong" across the sale.

"Our top breeders were making up to $1420," he said.

"The majority of the cows and calves made between $1000 and $1200."

For Gowrie Junction farmer John McMahon, the sale was a successful one.

"I thought the market was strong," he said.

"We sold 10 cows and calves."
