Celebrity season in Byron

WHILE Paris Hilton Twitters about a possible Byron Bay sabbatical this summer, laidback locals looking for celebrities to notice (or not) have their work cut out for them.

A few phone calls to Byronians feigning celebrity interest have so far revealed a dearth of A-list blow-ins clogging up the streets this year.

Hoges was spotted last week dining with Linda and Strop at the Orient Express, but beyond that the prospects for groupies look grim.

Local celebrity watcher ‘Gazza’ told The Northern Star it was looking like a ‘very stark year’.

“I’ve spotted Mandy Nolan many times, but that doesn’t count any more,” he said.

Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale has been seen around town between gigs, but he is so taken with the lifestyle he’s contemplating joining us; while The Footy Show’s Ash Bradnam told a Southport court on Monday he planned an extended stay at an ‘exclusive’ destination in Byron – so don’t expect to see him on the party circuit.

Last summer Elle Macpherson made a splash taking surfing lessons with Rusty Miller, while Simon Baker visited his mum at Lennox Head. Abbie Cornish had a stopover in Byron Bay with then new beau Ryan Phillippe, before whisking him off to the Hunter Valley to meet the folks; and Nicole Kidman played groupie to hubby Keith during last year’s Bluesfest.

But this year the celebrity appears to be becoming an endangered demographic. So unless they’ve perfected their disguises, or they’re hiding out in expensive rehabs, don’t hold your breath.
