Chaffey's Rio dream now official
TWEED super athlete Bill Chaffey can now set his sole focus on claiming gold at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, after Australia's paratriathlon team was officially announced in Coolangatta today.
Although Chaffey knew last September, barring injury, he'd already booked his Rio spot, he can breathe a sigh of relief and set his sights on gold now it is official.
"Finally, today after a long wait and a lot of hard work, I was officially announced as being on the team,” Chaffey said.
"It's been on my mind all the time, so for it to be finally official, it's just 'ok, now that's over, let's get on with it'.”
Getting on with it is exactly what Chaffey plans to do, with a gold medal the only thing missing from a glittering carrer that's netted the Tweed Heads police officer five ITU World Championships (2009, 2011-13, 2015) and one runner-up.
After paratriathlon was finally added to the Paralympic roster in 2016, Chaffey firmly set his sights on securing that elusive gold, with anything less a disappointment.
"What I want is gold and my focus is going there to win,” Chaffey said.
"I never go into a race hoping to come second. I always want to win and going to Rio, aiming to come anywhere but first, you're setting your sights too low.”
Chaffey said he was confident of handling the humid conditions through living and training on the Tweed and through taking part in last year's paratriathlon event where he tested the Rio course.
Chaffey, 40, knows this could be his only shot at Olympic gold and he's focussed on holding off younger athletes who are bridging the gap.
"I do have a lot of confidence, but I'm also not blinded to the fact that there's a lot of good athletes out there,” Chaffey said.
"I know a lot of the guys are going to be on my heels and at times, I'll be chasing them during the race.
"I just need to go out there and race my hardest race, which I guarantee I'll do.”
- The Australian Sports Foundation has extended its funding guidelines to allow individual athletes to mount their own fundraising campaigns and Chaffey is hoping to raise $10,000 to help him compete in Rio.
