Chamber not keen on supermarket on bowling green
THE prospect of a second major supermarket in Murwillumbah being built on the old bowls club site has attracted a lot of support on social media, but the local chamber of commerce isn't so sure.
"Big W, Woolies, Kmart, Aldi, any of these would be great," said Lyn Mann of the proposal for the supermarket on the Condong St site.
"Big W is what we need. A good variety store," said Cathie Franken.
But local chamber of commerce president Toni Zuschke is calling for a master plan to be drawn up for the CBD due to her fears that it is being planned in an ad hoc way.
Ms Zuschke said there were concerns about whether the town could support another major supermarket especially given all its vacant shops.
"If it's a full-blown Woolies ... that will obviously affect some of the smaller traders," she said.
"It's great for the town to grow and evolve ... but it's got to respect the businesses already here."
Site owners, the Murwillumbah Services Club, have made no decision about what will go there, with the supermarket proposal coming from the council which is proposing to rezone the site.
Meanwhile, a development application lodged to build a service station at Chinderah on the north side of the Pacific Hwy hasn't been greeted with much enthusiasm.
On the Daily News Facebook site, Judy Berry said a new outlet would impact on service stations in South Tweed Heads.
Vicki King fears that it will increase flooding in surrounding areas while Don Drummond railed against multinational companies taking over Chinderah.
