Chase the dream

WHEREAS water was an anathema to the biblical Noah, Burleigh Heads' Noah Lane has a real love affair with H2O, firmly establishing himself as one of the hottest boardriders in the state.

The likeable 22-year-old has taken a huge step towards fulfilling every surfer's boyhood dream of competing against the hottest talent on the planet on the ASP World Tour by winning the recent Chiko Queensland Championship Circuit series.

Noah's victory in the four-tournament QCC earned him not only $8000 in prizemoney but, more importantly, one of 16 invitations to contest the qualifying surf-off to earn a berth in the 2012 Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks – the first event on the ASP world tour.

The winner of the qualifying tournament will find himself out on the waves competing against the likes of Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson, Geordie Smith and Adriano de Souza.

“Like all kids who love to surf, it has been a lifelong dream to become good enough to compete as a professional on the World Tour,” Noah said.

“Really, I always thought it would be a dream that wouldn't come true because the cost of trying to pursue a pro career from where I am was prohibitive.

“But, winning this (QCC) has provided me with a big step towards using the Quiksilver Pro as a springboard to competing on the World Tour.”

Noah and 11 other invitees will contest the Quiksilver Pro qualifier at Snapper Rocks in the week before the ASP season opener. The winner will receive a wildcard into the prestigious event.

If Noah can win the qualifier and progress a long way in the Quiksilver Pro, he would almost certainly attract sponsorship that would fund a World Tour campaign.

“Realistically, there are plenty of ifs and buts about it all, but the opportunity has presented itself and I intend grabbing it with both hands and giving it my best shot,” Noah said.

If that shot goes astray, the world won't end for Noah Lane.

“I'll still be able to get out and surf whenever I can ,” he said.

“I don't need to have judges on the beach assessing my rides for me to get a thrill out of standing on a surfboard and riding waves.”

Noah has Plan B if the Quiksilver Pro Plan A fails.

He is in the second year of a commerce degree at Griffith University.

He is majoring in accounting and is already putting those acquired skills to work as part-time assistant manager at Neil Raaschou's Base@Cooly Surf.
