IT WAS a phone call that gave Mackay's Jason Chetcuti a belated birthday present.

After 10 days of public voting, Mr Chetcuti's dress was named the winner of The Face of Australia Cosmetics National Costume Competition.

His dress will be worn by Miss Universe Australia Olivia Wells in Moscow in November.

Mr Chetcuti said he would travel to Russia and attend the final night of the Miss Universe competition.

"I am so thrilled and excited that one billion viewers will see the design I have created," he said.

The competition was to design a dress that epitomised Australia, and Mr Chetcuti said surf, sand and beach was his inspiration.

Part of the design included feathers to represent sea anemone and the sand and coral were created with intricate beading.

Mr Chetcuti won against three other Australian designers.

He said he was not sure how many votes he received for his gown but was blown away by the support.

After the announcement of his win on Sunrise yesterday morning, Mr Chetcuti went to Facebook to thank his friends, their friends and the amazing networks of people and family who voted for him.

He said they all shared his success and he was appreciative of their support.

"The support on social networks was wonderful; I have many friends and clients around the world and they were a huge support."
