Cheer the red

GO The Red Dog is a punters' catch-cry heard across Australian pubs and TAB outlets, but everyone will have a reason to cheer the number one dog at the Grafton Greyhound meeting on May 17.

Greyhound Racing New South Wales in conjunction with all race clubs in NSW are conducting a huge fundraising push for cystic fibrosis during the month of May.

"In a nutshell GRNSW will donate $250 to cystic fibrosis in a 'Go The Red Dog' promotion each time a greyhound carries the red number one vest to victory," Grafton Greyhound Club secretary Brad Ellis said.

"Each club has one designated race meeting when this will take place, and ours is Thursday, May 17."

Cystic fibrosis is the most common life-threatening, recessive genetic condition which affects Australian children.

There is no cure but organisations such as Cystic Fibrosis Australia are dedicated to funding further research into the condition.

As the cystic fibrosis campaign is known as "65 Red Roses", the Grafton Greyhound Club is calling for $65 donations and in return will name five races throughout the racing year after the donor.

"The first 12 people or businesses to donate $65 will have a race on May 17 named in their honour, and will have four other races through the year also named after them," Ellis said.

"Any extra donors will still have five races named after them and this will obviously receive coverage in numerous media circles, and across Australia through the TAB."

Locally-run racing website Insidertips.com.au was the first cab off the rank yesterday in starting the donations, and Grafton club officials hope plenty more local businesses will see the value in the promotion as well as raising funds for a great cause.

To make a donation, simply get in touch with the Grafton Greyhound Club or make a bank transfer to their bank account (BSB 704328, ACC 101724) leaving your name or business name as reference.
