Cheers all round as council approves new Uki hotel plans
THE owners of the Mt Warning Hotel at Uki hope to be trading in their new $2million pub by Christmas time.
Brett and Kim Watson were grinning from ear to ear on Thursday night after Tweed Shire Council voted to approve (6-1) the plans for their new pub to replace the heritage-listed structure that burnt down in February last year.
The council has imposed a condition of consent to incorporate three historic hoop pine trees that will have to be felled into the new building, which the Watsons said wouldn't be a problem.
He expects construction to start within weeks.
He said while they would never be able to replace the original historic building, which would have turned 100 on December 22, they had produced a plan the majority of residents supported.
"The people of Uki need it up and running," he said.
"We're very excited to finally be getting the building process under way."
Of the 47 submissions the DA received during public consultation, three were opposed.
A resident spoke against the DA during public access but Uki resident Mayor Barry Longland said it was clear the majority of the community were in favour.
