Chinderah servo for Christmas

YOU'VE probably been driving past it for months, but finally the new $25 million Caltex service station is set to open before Christmas.

Construction began in January on the northbound 24-hour service station, next to Melaleuca Station Crematorium, which will be accessible from the Pacific Hwy and Tweed Valley Way.

Gold Coast developer Scott PDI owns and managed the project.

Managing director David Scott said the new service station would be a great asset to the Tweed.

"Construction is very well-advanced, with final fit-outs and certifications only remaining,” Mr Scott said.

"We have made good progress in the second half of 2016 after progress was slowed by rain delays in the first half of the year.”

The new Caltex station will have an internal food court featuring McDonald's, KFC and organic food operation Oliver's Real Food.

The station will have plenty of parking available, including 121 car parking spaces, five spaces for buses and caravans and provision for 25 parking spaces for B-double trucks.

The station will be a welcome relief for drivers, as the closest northbound stations are located some distance away at Grafton in NSW and Robina in Queensland.

"Therefore, this centre is very important to provide amenities to the travelling public and truck drivers in northern NSW,” Mr Scott said.

Mr Scott said about 100 people had been employed during the past 12 months of construction.

"It's been fantastic to be able to provide this level of employment during a time where the work has been needed by the community,” he said.

In the past few months, drivers reported unusual smells coming from the construction site, which originated from the Tweed Valley Tea Tree plantation.

But Mr Scott said the smell didn't seem to bother any of the workers and wasn't a concern.

"Not from our perspective, though certainly there were no smell issues that were a result of our construction activities,” he added.

The proposed date for the grand opening is set for December 21, depending on the project's completion.
