Christmas hamper company cops $200k fine over lay-bys

CHRISTMAS hamper company Chrisco has copped a $200,000 fine for breaching consumer laws.

In proceedings brought by consumer watchdog the ACCC, the Federal Court found the company had broken the rules by telling customers they could not cancel their lay-bys after making final payments.

All consumers have the right to cancel lay-bys before delivery.

The court also found Chrisco's 2014 agreements contained an unfair contract term allowing it to continue direct debiting after shoppers had paid for their goods unless consumers opted out.
