Church wants Terranora Tavern to clean up its act
THE leader of the Promise Faith Centre Church in Terranora is hoping for more salubrious neighbours when the now-defunct Terranora Tavern premises re-opens.
Reverend Christen Semmen said that during contractual cleaning duties at the Terranora Village, her group had regularly made unsavoury discoveries.
Among other concerns, they found vomit on the stairs, benches pushed over and broken chairs as they cleaned.
She said there were rumours of bikies and sex workers active from the tavern.
Two other Terranora Village tenants, who did not want to be named, said bikies had frequented the establishment late at night before the tavern closed six months ago.
"Everyone was pretty aware of what was going on," Reverend Semmen said. She said complaints had been sent to the relevant authorities.
Tweed Byron LAC, how-ever, has no knowledge of any untoward activities.
"That would be of interest for us, and to date no such information has been discussed or investigated," Inspector Darren Steel said.
The real estate agent handling the property denies any knowledge of problems and the owner would not comment about the rumours.
The tavern is up for lease through an estate agent for $110,000pa.
The property, located on Australia Dr, is about 1200sq m in size, over three levels, with lift access.
It has a drive-through bottle shop, several bars, commercial kitchen, two beer gardens and is fully set up.
The Promise Faith Centre Church operates a cafe, prayer groups and mass at the village, so it's no surprise it is keen for new neighbours.
"It's got huge potential if it gets into the right hands and someone picks it up as a function centre," Reverend Semmen said.
"It's got spectacular views, beautiful amenities, it's well maintained.
"It would be perfect for something like a high tea or weddings."
