Welcome to our newest Aussies

AFTER more than 44 years living in Australia, 20 of those in the Tweed, Salvation Army worker Richard Hardaker has become an Australian citizen.

Mr Hardaker and 38 others officially became Aussies at a citizenship ceremony at the Tweed Civic Centre yesterday.

The former Briton said it was his passion for charity work that motivated him to take the extra step and become a citizen.

“My partner and I really wanted to get our Australian passports so we can continue to do mission work,” Mr Hardaker said.

“We love to travel, but the Tweed is definitely our home now.”

Richmond MP Justine Elliot said she always enjoyed attending citizenship ceremonies.

“These are always exciting ceremonies,” she said.

“It's great to see so many people deciding to become citizens, and nice to know they're settling here on the Tweed.

“It's the best address on Earth.”

The new citizens hailed from Britain (13), China (6), New Zealand (4), Philippines (3), Sweden, France, South Africa (2), Scotland, Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Venezuela, Vietnam and Fiji (1).
