Cleaner does the dirty on customers

AN ALSTONVILLE based cleaner, who has left a dirty trail of disgruntled customers across several states, was fined $5000 in Queensland on Wednesday for failing to supply promised services.

Since 2012, there have been more than 80 complaints about Cassandra Nicole Cooney, who controls more than 10 cleaning companies in various states, according to NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe.

The companies have been registered under the names of Cassandra Nicole Cooney, or Cassandra Voros, Mr Stowe said.

He warned people about dealing with Ms Cooney or the companies Total Domestic, Bond Cleaners Australia or Bond Cleaners Trust, Express Bond Cleaning, Express End of Lease Cleaning, Express Home Cleaning, Express Commercial Cleans, Express Professional Services, Easy Cleaning Services, Simple Cleans or Moving Out Cleans.

Mr Stowe said the average amount of each cleaning job was $300.

"The complaints relate to businesses accepting payment for cleaning services and then failing to supply those services," he said.

"Consumers have often been unable to contact the business they dealt with or Ms Cooney, or obtain a full refund."

After her Queensland business dealings were reported to the Office of Fair Trading, Cooney was slapped with six charges of wrongly accepting payment and failing to supply services within a specified time.

On Wednesday at Southport Magistrates Court, Cooney pleaded guilty to the charges and was fined $5000.

The charges related to six complaints between March and July 2013, when Cooney accepted payments from consumers in Brisbane and the Gold Coast to provide end-of-tenancy bond cleans but failed to provide the cleaning services.

The court heard Cooney had the opportunity to refund affected customers for some time, but she only refunded payments just prior to her court appearance.

Despite pleading guilty and being fined, no criminal conviction was recorded against Cooney.

In September 2015, the Northern Territory Consumer Affairs Commissioner, Gary Clements, issued a public warning about Cooney, after complaints from several states.

"This kind of behaviour is detrimental as it damages consumer confidence, particularly in an increasingly online retail environment," Mr Clements said.

"The difficulty encountered by consumers in this case also highlights the benefits of shopping local when looking for services."

Anyone who has had unsavoury dealings with Cooney is urged to call NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20 or visit www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au
