Clearing troubled waters
RESIDENTS living in Upper Tallebudgera are less likely to be cut off this wet season after a bridge upgrade.
A $2.4million bridge upgrade spanning Tallebudgera Creek on Syndicate Rd is nearing completion, with yesterday's final installation of girders.
The two-lane bridge will replace a one-lane bridge built in 1973 that was submerged during every one-in-10-year flood.
Gold Coast City Council's Engineering Services Committee chair Councillor Dawn Crichlow said the increasing number of residents in the area meant a two-lane bridge was required.
"The bridge is on track to be finished by November in time for the next wet season," Cr Crichlow said.
"The bridge costs $2.4million but the entire road project is $4.2million.
"On completion, the new bridge will be able to cater for heavy rainfall events up to a one-in-20-year flood.
"Council is for the first time utilising a new re-usable, modular steel bridge which is carrying traffic across the creek while the new concrete bridge is under construction.
"When the new bridge is opened, the modular bridge will be dissembled and available for its next project."
Cr Crichlow said the council had received a lot of feedback about the bridge works.
The re-usable temporary bridge is an engineering asset that Council will continue to employ on other projects during its expected life span expected to be in the vicinity of 50 years.
