Clubs rally against gambling licences
NOT-for-profit clubs in the Tweed region have called on the community to support a rally against the Federal Government’s proposed gambling licences.
Twin Towns Services Club general manager Rob Smith said the scheme would deliver north coast clubs a fatal blow.
"Just in our area, clubs will have to spend $39 million just to install this ‘big-brother’ scheme and around 440 local staff will lose their jobs because clubs won’t be able to afford to keep them on," he said.
"Worse still, many clubs may have no choice but to close their doors."
Host, South Tweed Sports Club CEO Gordon Rhodes, said installing the technology would cost the club more than $2.8 million.
"Incredibly, a number of leading problem gambling counsellors and researchers have expressed their fear that the technology will actually delay problem gamblers from getting help while punishing the social punters who enjoy the occasional flutter on the pokies," he said.
"Not-for-profit clubs like ours have supported the community for decades, and we need the community to send a strong message to Canberra that clubs are to be protected from this political madness.
"This rally is our chance to be heard and save our local clubs," Mr Rhodes said.
The rally will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, July 26 at the South Tweed Sports Club.
