Coast talents claim battle

KINGSCLIFF TAFE was abuzz on Friday night for the Tweed Battle of the Bands final.

Gold Coast band Weather Permitting, whose sound is a mix of hip hop, folk and acoustic, took out the top prize.

Band member Marley Winslade said she was thrilled with the win.

“There were so many good bands so it’s incredible that we got this,” she said.

Bandmate Jordan Winslade said they couldn’t have guessed who the winner was, because of the high calibre of all the finalists.

“It’s great because we were blown away by the quality of all the performances,” he said.

Lennox Head band Project Jurassic put on an impressive and professional show which saw them claim second place.

Pottsville-based Marlon McDonald and Friends took out third place.

“I had a good response after the set,” Mr McDonald said.

“I just want to thank (organisers) Kristie (Hedley) and Jenny (Unwin) and everyone for putting this on.”

He said the judges’ feedback from the heats had allowed them to finesse their acts before Friday’s final.

Kristie Hedley, one of the battle’s organisers, said this year’s final boasted one of the most diverse group of acts yet.

Musician Kenny Slide, Cindy Jensen, from Buskers by the Creek Festival, and Anita Colenbrander from Bluesfest Buskers Comp were the judges for the final.
