Coast the punters' choice

GOLD Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games if domestic betting agencies are to be believed.

The odds have the Gold Coast as a hot favourite to be named host when the decision is announced tomorrow morning.

Major online betting website Sportsbet.com.au will pay $1.50 for a decision in the Gold Coast's favour and $2.50 if Sri Lanka's Hambantota bid is successful.

While a Hambantota decision would give punters a bigger payout, local stakeholders have their fingers crossed for the games to come to the Gold Coast.

Either way, there will be many nervous people waiting for the 8am (Qld) announcement.

A public event has been organised for tomorrow on the Gold Coast that will broadcast the announcement live from St Kitts and Nevis.

Parliamentary Secretary assisting the Premier on the 2018 Commonwealth Games bid, Peta-Kaye Croft, encouraged people to come to the event.

"The live announcement event will commence from 6.30am with Tai Chi, interactive sports events and of course a free healthy breakfast for all attending," Ms Croft said.

"It will also feature a five-kilometre park run and plenty of on-stage sports demonstrations and a Commonwealth country flag parade before the official announcement at 8am.

"After the announcement there'll be a performance by hip hop sensation Justice Crew with plenty of prize giveaways.

"Win or lose, this will be a fantastic event to unite the whole of the Gold Coast and we encourage as many people as possible to attend and get behind our 2018 Commonwealth Games bid."

The event that will also feature athletes such as cricketer Matthew Hayden and Olympic Games gold medallist Giaan Rooney and will take place tomorrow from 6.30am at Broadwater Parklands, Southport.
