Cobaki trail bikers cause $300k in damage

QUEENSLAND and Tweed Byron LAC police will be working together to target motorbike riders trespassing on the proposed Cobaki Lakes Estate development.

Trail bike riders are accessing the development between Boyd St, Tugun and Piggabeen Rd at Cobaki by cutting through private and council-owned land on the Queensland side of the border.

The activity has been the subject of numerous complaints from local residents due to noise and damage caused to infrastructure, estimated at $300,000.

Police are warning that anyone found trespassing on the development is likely to find themselves issued with an on-the-spot fine of $350.

Motorbike riders may also find themselves issued with infringements for riding an unregistered and/or uninsured motorbike if riding on a gazetted road.

Noise abatement directions for excessive noise may also be issued on the spot.

Contravention of a noise abatement direction can result in a motorbike being impounded.

Officer in Charge at Coolangatta Police Station Senior Sergeant Meg McArthur said riding trail bikes at Cobaki was a risk to the community's safety and carried the risk of trespassing as an offence.

"The safety of all members of the community is paramount and we are reminding people to ride only in authorised areas,” Snr Sgt McArthur said.

Tweed-Byron LAC Crime Coordinator Sergeant Cameron Miller said a series of targeted operations were planned until offenders were caught.

"Some trail bike riders may not be aware that entering the development is trespassing, so it's important people realise entering the area is an offence,” Sgt Miller said.
