A TEACHER from a high school in Coffs Harbour has been charged with allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old male student.

The woman faces five charges relating to having sex with a child in special care and one charge of indecent assault.

Detectives from the Child Abuse Squad's Coffs Harbour office last month learned of the alleged incidents, which occurred in 2013.

The Child Abuse Squad employs detectives specially trained to investigate crimes against children, including sexual assault, physical abuse and serious cases of neglect.

The woman, who lives and works in the greater Coffs Harbour area, has been charged with five counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 18 years under special care; and one count of indecent assault.

She has been granted conditional bail to appear before Coffs Harbour Local Court on January 6.
