Color Run conquers Coast with 12,000 human paint palettes
JUST hours after caking thousands of smiling faces in a rainbow explosion, organisers have guaranteed the Color Run will return to the Sunshine Coast next year.
A sold out crowd of 12,108 yesterday took part in the 5km charity run-with-a-difference around Stockland Park at Kawana.
The event is billed as the "happiest" run on the planet where participants pay for the privilege of being bombarded with an array of coloured powder.
The run has been staged all across the country but yesterday's Sunshine Coast edition was the organiser's third largest, only surpassed by the two Melbourne events.
Of the participants, about 50% were from the Coast and some were lining up outside the venue at 6am - a good three hours before the first wave went around the track.
Color Run national manager Luke Hannan said he was blown away by the turnout, especially for a regional area.
He said the Sunshine Coast had embraced the Color Run with gusto and could not wait to return next year.
"I think we're going to be back 100%," he said.
"We'll talk with Stockland Park next week and lock in the date nice and early.
"I think just talking to my crew who come from Melbourne and Sydney, and to hear that the Sunshine Coast is their favourite, that we're able to enjoy your beautiful area, it says a lot.
"A lot of work was put in at the venue and it was great to see so many smiling faces."
Somewhere between the starting line at Sportsmans Parade and the finish inside the stadium, the throbbing sea of white t-shirts which set out was transformed into a sea of colour.
A "finishing festival" dance party greeted participants on the Stockland Sunshine Coast Stadium field where punters were pounded with - you guessed it - more coloured dye.
The feeling among participants was one of overwhelming positivity and good vibes echoed around the venue.
"I just wanted to have a good time and support a great cause," Nicole Norrie from Landsborough said
Her mate Ros Johnston from Springfield Lakes chimed in: "I did the event on the Gold Coast, I had a great time so I decided to do it again. It was great."
