Colorado massacre suspect in court

JAMES Holmes made his way into a silent courthouse for his first appearance since the mass murder he is accused of via a tunnel under the Aurora court and sat stricken and silent throughout the proceedings.

His eyes were lidded, and sometimes closed completely for long seconds, his head occasionally lolled.

He was unshaven and his flaming red clown hair was thicker and longer than it appeared to be in photographs published earlier.

The 24-year-old accused of killing 12 and injuring 58 in a Colorado cinema last Friday sat mute next to a lawyer in the jury box rather than at the defence table.

Apparently officials wanted to keep him as far as possible from the five family members who attended on behalf of three victims.
