Josh Lawson behind the camera to explore 'real' romance

Contributed

JOSH Lawson is well known to Australian audiences as a comic actor in Thank God You're Here and The Librarians, as well as the film Questions for Ben.

He's also recently been working in America on the popular series House of Lies and just completed a role in the highly anticipated Anchorman 2 with Will Farrell.

People may even know him from his time dating Australia's golden girl Rachel Taylor.

But far fewer people may know he's been back in Australia directing his first short film After the Credits, which will feature at the Heart of Gold International Film Festival until Sunday at the Gympie Civic Centre.

After the Credits is a playful take on what happens after the credits roll in a romantic movie.

"I watched so many romantic comedies and just when they kiss and the movie would end, I'd think 'this is where the movie should begin'," Josh said.

"This is where the real drama would start, if this was real life. So I just decided to add some real life to the romantic comedy - and out of that came After the Credits."

Festival artistic directors Tahnee McGuire and Stephen Kanaris really enjoyed watching After the Credits.

"It's a wonderful tongue-in-cheek exploration and unravelling of some of the common cliches in romantic comedy and Josh has obviously brought his talent for comedy to it because it's very funny," Tahnee said.

Josh didn't find it too difficult moving behind the camera.

"It's a very natural shift, I think. I have been in front of the camera for so long; on sets since I was a little boy, so I knew the basics," he said.

"Then I just surrounded myself with lots of talented people, who would tell me if I was doing something stupid - it was foolproof.

"Sitting in the audience at its premiere in Palm Springs was amazing - the audience really responded to it. That was my favourite part."

And he's obviously enjoyed it because he is about to film his first feature film.

"I'm about to start season two of House of Lies in LA and I've just finished up shooting Anchorman 2," Josh said.

"So now I'm taking a break from acting by directing my first feature, which I wrote, called The Little Death.

"It's been a long time in development and to finally have it come to fruition is truly a dream come true."

After the Credits will screen as part of Shorts 7 on Friday, July 12, 2-3.30pm at the Heritage Theatre.
