Commission of Audit chiefs to face Labor, Greens grilling

THE heads of the Abbott Government's Commission of Audit - the body tasked with finding savings across the entire federal budget - will face a grilling from Labor and Green senators next week.

A Senate Select committee inquiry was set up by senators from the Opposition and the Greens last year, with a focus on shedding light on the workings of the commission.

The key focus of the inquiry will be to investigate the effects of any cuts or changes to the Commonwealth budget recommended by the audit, including in major portfolios such as health, education and defence.

While a final decision on the date of a hearing has not been officially announced, apparently a hearing will be scheduled for Wednesday.

Witnesses likely to appear before the committee on Wednesday include all the commissioners completing the audit, but particularly chairman Tony Shepherd.

However, committee chairman, Greens Senator Richard Di Natale, was unable to comment.
