Community anger over noise input

RESIDENTS under the southern flight path from the Gold Coast Airport were angry their input into noise abatement seemed to be ignored.

Their anger got an airing at a public Community Aviation Consultation Group meeting yesterday.

Airservices community relations group senior advisor James Goodwin told the vocal audience they would not be consulted before terms of reference for a noise abatement review into the Gold Coast Airport was drafted.

"We won't be engaging with the community on the terms of reference," Mr Goodwin said.

"The draft terms of reference will have a feedback period.

"We are more than happy to consult with the community, but we can't on something that hasn't been created yet.

"The noise abatement review is to be complete by the middle of next year so there is time for community input."

Airport Noise Abatement Consultative Committee southern representative Bill Pinkstone said the community wanted input into the terms of reference before they were drawn up.

"The community is angry. The community is upset," Mr Pinkstone said.

"We will be having a public meeting where there is likely to be a vote of no confidence in Airservices in its consultation with the community."

Mr Goodwin said Airservices valued community consultation, but admitted there were some problems with the process in the past.

"There has been a senate inquiry and there have been changes," he said.

"We do have community relations now.

"We will do things differently, that's why we have three Airservices representatives here at the meeting today."

A public meeting to discuss airport noise is planned for Kingscliff on October 31 at the Cudgen Leagues Club starting at 7pm.
