Community fractured over sacking of Tweed general manager
THE TWEED community and council are "fractured" according to organisers of yesterday's rally against the sacking of Tweed Shire Council's David Keenan.
"The turnout of over 750 people proves people are angry," said president of the Tweed Heads Chamber of Commerce, Rory Curtis.
President of the Murwillumbah and District Business Chamber, Toni Zuschke said the community was polarised over the mayor, Barry Longland and three other councillors' decision to terminate Mr Keenan's contract.
"It was a hasty decision made without consultation with other councillors," she said.
"This is causing disharmony in the community.
"I'm deeply saddened by all of this."
Ms Zuschke said people needed closure.
"There's a real need for answers," she said.
"The community has no confidence in the council right now.
"They want to move forward without this factional fighting and they want the facts."
The Division of Local Government is investigating the dismissal.
"I'm looking forward to them finding an end result," Ms Zuschke said.
"We are all in limbo land.
"We said our piece at the rally and we hope the truth will be revealed so we can move on."
