Community grows food to feed those in need

A GARDEN situated behind the Tugun Village Community Centre is 'cultivating a community,' according to local Southern Beaches Community Garden member Mark Bibby.

Flourishing with an abundance of fresh fruit and veggies, nuts and herbs and even bush tucker, the communal garden is now sourced as a means to support local charities.

Mr Bibby said it's great to bring people together and unite over a shared hobby and at the same time support those in need.

"Every week we have youth from the not-for-profit organisation SCISCO volunteer their time to harvest fresh produce and donate their collections to the homeless," he said.

"We also have ties with many multi-cultural groups across the coast that we encourage to come along to working bees, share their knowledge and meet new people.

"The initiative has really taken off since we first began."

Gardening enthusiast Margot James pushed for the gardens back in 2009 and said she was pleased with its progression.

"I wanted to create a resource which would draw people out of their comfort zone and back together," she said.

"There was this huge space in Tugun that wasn't being used, it was the perfect spot.

"There was no fencing, plenty of car parking, accessibility to transport and even a children's playground.

"I knew people who had expertise in gardening would eventually come too," she said.

The Southern Beaches Community Garden group is now a fully incorporated association with 70 financial members.

Mr Bibby said due to popularity there were currently no spare garden plots available.

"It's up to the local government to provide more land to lease as to meet demand," he said.
