Community photo display to look back at way Fingal was

AFTER three years of collecting old pictures and film of Fingal Head, the local community association will be showing off its collection at an exhibition on February 8.

There will be a display of hundreds of photos and items of memorabilia plus an opportunity to view video footage which has been transferred from old film and tapes.

"We thank all the Tweed residents and former Tweed residents who have contributed photos, film and other memorabilia to this collection and now we'd like to take the opportunity to welcome you and all interested people to see how this collection is progressing," co-ordinator Kate McKenzie said.

"It is far from complete and we are still looking for more photos so if you have old, or not so old, photos etc of Fingal Head, you may like to bring them on February 8 and we will scan them and give them back to you."

There will also be the opportunity to order copies of photos which have consent for their sale.

Ms McKenzie said they were particularly interested in tracking down pictures showing the town's sand-dunes pre-sandmining.

"Seventy and 80-year-olds can remember sliding down the high sand-dunes on cardboard," Ms McKenzie said.

Another area of interest was the "very ugly" corrugated fence that stretched around the lighthouse up until the 1950s.

Rumour has it that the fence was erected to keep vandals away from the landmark, but Ms McKenzie said they were seeking anyone who may be able to offer information and photos about it.

Doors open at Fingal Head Public School's multi-purpose building at 1.30pm with a digital visual presentation of the heritage collection to be shown at 2pm.
