AN IPSWICH woman has been given community service as punishment for racially abusing a prominent Muslim woman.

Jay-Leighsa Bauman, 23, pleaded guilty to using the internet to menace, harass or cause offence to lawyer Mariam Veiszadeh.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard Bauman (pictured left) called Ms Veiszadeh a "whore", a "rag head" and told her to return to her own "sand dune country" during a torrent of online abuse.

The charges came as a result of Facebook posts that Bauman directed at Ms Veiszadeh, 30, on January 3 this year.

The case was adjourned several times before Bauman's eventual sentencing on May 21, before Magistrate Donna MacCallum. Ms MacCallum ordered Bauman to complete 180 hours or community service.

Ms Veiszadeh posted on Twitter yesterday: "No one should have to endure death threats, receive abusive phone calls and have bacon mailed to them all because they expressed an opinion".
