Community ‘welcome in Tweed shire'
RESIDENTS of Ocean Shores, north of Brunswick Heads, would be welcome to escape Byron Shire Council's “extreme Greens and come to a council with a shade of green”, says former Tweed mayor Warren Polglase.
Cr Polglase has weighed into the growing calls for the new O'Farrell State Government to reconsider local council boundaries.
He said Ocean Shores, a community of about 7000 people, “would fit very nicely into the Tweed”.
He said the amalgamation could provide cost savings and efficiencies for both Ocean Shores residents and existing Tweed ratepayers.
Earlier this week NSW Liberal Party Upper House MP Catherine Cusack called on Premier Barry O'Farrell to merge or scrap some local councils, citing Ocean Shores residents who had sought to join the Tweed as an example of a potential amalgamation.
“That issue of Oceans Shores has been going on a long, long time,” said Cr Polglase.
“When I was mayor five to six years ago they came to see us looking to be part of Tweed Shire. Ocean Shores would fit very nicely into the Tweed. It's a vibrant coastal area. It's got great potential with tourism.”
Cr Polglase said it made common sense to amalgamate some of the local government areas of NSW.
“Big is not always beautiful but big can be more efficient,” he said.
“We should not put our heads in the sand. It should be looked at.”
