Companies to warn customers about overseas roaming charges

NEW standards requiring telecommunications companies who provide international mobile roaming services to be more open about costs, will help holidaying Aussies to better avoid "bill shock", Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced.

From September, the Australian Communications and Media Authority will require companies to ensure customers travelling overseas to receive warnings about the charges that may apply and more information about the services available.

Speaking to reporters in Sydney on Wednesday, Mr Albanese said Australians could be paying more than 150 times their normal rates while overseas.

"These outrageous prices mean that too many Australians are coming home from an overseas holiday and being confronted with a mobile phone bill that costs more than the trip itself," Mr Albanese said

"By ensuring telecommunications companies provide timely and relevant information to their customers means such bill shock can be avoided."
