Convention centre on cards if council backs the plan

A CONVENTION centre could be green-lighted for the Tweed Heads CBD if the council decides to back the plan.

The Tweed Chamber of Commerce supported the idea this week at its business breakfast.

Twin Towns Services Club general manager Rob Smith also supports the idea.

"There's always a need for something that attracts more people into the region," Mr Smith said.

"If someone would attract 5000 people to a show, we simply wouldn't get that into this area (otherwise)."

Mr Smith said the Gold Coast Convention Centre was a classic example of the right venue boosting the economy of a region.

"There's a lot of benefits that come from a good convention centre in regional areas," he said.

"Jupiters Casino has capacities much like our own, and right next door there's stadium acts."

Tweed Mayor Barry Longland said the council was in the process of assessing the feasibility of a convention centre, as well as possible funding models.

But he said it was too early to indicate the council's position on the matter.

"The fact is, it would be a multi-million dollar project," Cr Longland said.

"We need to undergo a thorough analysis of the potential demand."
