Convicted killer jailed for terrorising Coffs woman

A CONVICTED killer who terrorised a Coffs Harbour woman and stashed his gun in a reserve frequented by children, has been jailed for at least two years.

Raymond William Hornby, a serial violent offender with a criminal past spanning back to the late 70s, was arrested in January last year following a series of disputes with a woman who had mistakenly befriended him.

On one occasion, Hornby assaulted the woman and was later seen by neighbours to return to her house with a gun.

Following his arrest, Hornby led detectives to a section of bushland at Park Beach and showed them where he had hidden the gun.

He was charged with a string of offences including possessing a shortened firearm and assault occasioning bodily harm.

Inquiries into Hornby's criminal history revealed he had been convicted of murdering two men.

In 1980, he was jailed for 12 years for killing a man who had apparently made unwelcome homosexual advanced towards him.

Two years after he was released on parole in the early 90s, Hornby killed again during a bungled armed robbery in Sydney.

He was released from jail in 2005.

On Friday, Hornby fronted the Sydney District Court where he was sentenced over the Coffs Harbour offences.

He was given a total of three years jail and will be eligible for parole in 2014.
