Coolangatta players struggle with loss
COOLANGATTA players are struggling to come to terms with the tragic death of teammate Andrew Colbey who died while playing for the Blues on Sunday.
The father-of-two died after suffering a suspected heart attack while playing an Australian rules masters game at Springwood.
Coolangatta Masters AFL club secretary Cameron Thiessen was among those at the match and had to make the heartbreaking call to Colbey's wife Cheryl.
"It's hard to comprehend,” Thiessen said.
"Everyone is shocked. I just can't believe it. We're playing footy for the fun of it, you don't expect something like this. It's surreal.”
The Coolangatta Blues were playing Springwood at Lowe Oval at Springwood when the tragedy occurred.
Colbey, 45, collapsed to the ground after getting rid of the ball. His teammates rushed to his aid but were unable to revive him.
"I saw it all but I wish I hadn't,” Thiessen said.
"Some of our players are in surf lifesaving and they did everything they could before paramedics arrived.”
Colbey was originally from Alice Springs and played senior football with the Blues during the 1990s before linking with the Coolangatta Masters this season after returning to teh coast to take up a teaching position.
"Andrew was a very good footballer,” Thiessen said.
"This was in his first season with us and it was only his second game in the masters competition.”
Both the Coolangatta Seniors and the Tweed-Coolangatta juniors will honour their Coolangatta Masters teammate by wearing black armbands during their games this weekend.
The Masters will not play this weekend with their next scheduled match not until August 7 but Thiessen said he was unsure if the game would go ahead.
Thiessen said the tragedy had rocked the club and some players were questioning their commitment to the game.
"It's very difficult,” he said.
"I don't even know if everyone will play. We're catching up tomorrow night and we'll have a chat then. There is still a bit of disbelief.”
Coolangatta will host Robina at Len Peak Oval Saturdaywith the Reserves game to commence at 11.45am with the Seniors to play at 2pm.
