Cooly champs ready to clash in surfing showdown
IT'S almost time for the clash of the Cooly kids at the Volcom Fiji Pro.
Coolangatta's Joel 'Parko' Parkinson and Mick Fanning will face off in the event's quarterfinal for what is expected to be a truly epic showdown.
Parko was scored 18.20 to defeat Yadin Nicol 14.40 in round three of the competition, while Fanning won with a 19.53 against Kolohe Andino on 14.34 in 2-2.5m surf at Cloudbreak.
Meanwhile, Kelly Slater earned a perfect 10 and a 9.30 in round four to advance to the Quarterfinals.
"The waves are so good that it felt like a crime to come in," Parko said
"It was one of those heats you hope to get where the conditions just seemed like it turned on.
"That was a dream heat, we actually missed some of the good waves."
Parko said despite his love for Tahiti's pumping surf, he had to give Fiji the nod for world's best left.
"Cloudbreak is the best left in the world," he said.
"I love Tahiti, but with how fast you can go and get barrels and do turns and everything, to me, it's the best left in the world."
Fanning said he was proud of his performance after a slow start to the Fiji Pro.
"I had that slow heat earlier today and that was pretty much the opposite," he said.
"Awesome to finally get some good barrels at Cloudbreak and I'm happy to be through to the Quarters.
"I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
Event organisers will gather at Cloudbreak this morning at 6:30am Fiji time for a possible finish to competition.
