Cooroy shop scammed of $3000 by ATM con

A COOROY shop owner conned out of $3000 by two credit card fraudsters has warned other businesses of the potential danger.

Several businesses in the small town were targeted last week as part of a calculated ATM-skimming operation, robbing stores of several thousand dollars.

The con involved a woman claiming to be a customer and a man posing as a courier.

Maple Lane Country Gifts co-owner Renee Miers said her store received a call from a woman who advised that a courier would collect her order and pay in cash.

Mrs Miers said the man arrived in uniform posing as a courier with a portable ATM in hand.

"He handed over the cash for the items and then told us he couldn't be paid in cash for his services," she said.

"He asked if we'd mind if he paid us the cash he was given by the woman (for his courier services) for which we could reimburse him with our money from a card.

"He was adamant it had to be a card."

The man timed his run well, arriving at the store during peak business hours, allowing him to distract busy staff members.

Mrs Miers said the man was chatting constantly throughout the con, adding to the already flustered situation.

When Mrs Miers checked her accounts the next day, she was missing $3000 and immediately contacted her bank, which advised that her money was withdrawn from an ATM.

Mrs Miers said she was confident the bank would cover her loss but said it would be some time before she saw the cash.

"Unlike the rest of us, I reckon they would have had a nice Christmas with all that cash," she said.

The man is described as being Caucasian in appearance, aged in his late 30s or early 40s, about 178cm tall with a slim build and fair complexion.
