COVID-19 mythbusting: Mitchell cops quell lockdown rumours
NO, THE town of Mitchell will not be going in to lockdown because of coronavirus.
That is the latest advice from local officer in charge, senior constable Adam Robertson.
The senior constable and his team are ensuring their community is safe during the global coronavirus pandemic, and debunked the locally-circulating myth.
"Unless we receive further advice, there is no lockdown, and that will remain the case," Snr Cnst Robertson said.
"Things do change on a day-to-day basis and we will act in accordance with the directions from the government, and from our superior officers, but at this stage there is no lockdown for Mitchell whatsoever."
During the current health crisis, all Queensland police have been given emergency powers, as designated emergency officers.
In terms of the coronavirus pandemic, it means they can enforce the recommended social distancing and isolation measures, and non-compliance can be considered an offence.
However, the team at Mitchell have not had to resort to those measures; instead, they are focusing on keeping locals informed.
"Here and now, we have not had to exercise any of our emergency powers," Snr Cnst Robertson said.
"During our usual patrols we are seeing people do the right thing, and we took the initiative of using the Mitchell Blue Light Disco's Facebook page as a quick and effective way of getting the right messages out there.
"We are really on the front foot with getting messages out there."
At the Mitchell Police station, social isolation measures remain in place at the front counter, which is still open to the public.
However, at the small counter area only one person will be permitted at a time.
With the safety measures in place, the team is trusting their community will not panic.
"The station will remain open until we are told to close," he said.
"We are a small country town, and people are generally calm.
"They don't jump at shadows, they raise legitimate concerns, and we will address those; but so far, so good."
