THE upcoming launch of MACS (Marine Action Conservation Society) at Tweed has been boosted by the donation of a conservation-targeted parcel of land by Tweed Shire Council.

MACS is a locally based non-profit organisation representing the Tweed Shire community that promotes environmental initiatives.

Founded by Jack Adams, director of Watersports Guru, Tom Bowling an expert in marine biology and aquaculture and Michael Manley, an environmental scientist, the organisation takes into account the entire Green Cauldron, but focuses on local lakes, rivers and creeks that run out into the ocean off the Tweed.

"Our emphasis is on local pride and in maintaining the beautiful Tweed and those natural areas that we enjoy, so we can have a green and clean shire," Mr Adams said.

"With the help of advisor Brad Farmer who founded the National Surf Reserves and the Surfrider Foundation we are putting together a board of stakeholders which will include some of the Tweed's most respected community members."

Mr Manley said the slogan "MACS CARES" promotes conservation, activism, research, education and sustainability.

"Our two main projects at this point are finding a viable substitute to eliminate non-biodegradable plastic bags from the Tweed and focussing on the repair and maintenance of the eroding riparian vegetation zones along our recreational waterways."

The donated land on the south side of Kingscliff Bridge will be utilised in the repairing and restoration of the creek bank, according to Mr Adams.

"Kingscliff High School has put its hand up for students to take part in the project by eliminating weeds, replanting native saplings and help repair the erosion on the creek banks," he said.

"It's a great initiative for school students to enjoy these recreational areas and to understand it's ecology so they continue to respect and help sustain these beautiful natural environments for future generations."

"When MACS launches on September 29 at the Kingscliff Community Hall we would love the community to embrace this local initiative, get involved and help sustain an environment that we are all proud to call home."
