Council employees brave the shave for cancer research
A TWEED Shire Council employee's involvement in Shave for a Cure meant more to him than just raising money.
Water supervisor Jeff Holt has had Mylofibrosis (a bone marrow disorder) for the past eight years.
Mr Holt was prompted to start fundraising for Shave for a Cure by his friend of 40 years, George Heyer of Banora Point.
Mr Heyer also was shaved this morning at the council event.
"George has a blood disorder, Multiple Myeloma, so he thought it would be good if we did it together," Mr Holt said.
"Today, 31 Australians like me will get the news they have blood cancer.
"Any donations will help the Leukaemia Foundation support them from the moment they are diagnosed, free of charge."
Ranger Mark Bignell joined the pair in the shave at the council chambers today.
Mr Bignell lost his long, blonde locks to a 'number two' cut for the cause.
"I've been wanting to get my hair cut off since Christmas as it's so hot, but decided to hold off for Shave for a Cure because it's a worthwhile cause," Mr Bignell said.
He said he would not miss the hair but would miss ribbing his partner about having longer hair than she had.
Tweed Heads hairdresser, Rachel Hannah of Halo Hair in Kennedy Drive, donated her time to help Mark, Jeff and George shed their manes.
Although their heads have now been shaved, the three men are still fundraising.
