Council extends saleyards lease

TWEED Shire Council is extending the lease of the Murwillumbah Cattle Saleyards after delays in approving a buyer.

According to a report put to the council meeting last week, the timing of the council elections means the current lease would expire before any buyer could be approved.

The council is required to advertise its intention to sell the land, with a 21-day submission period and then report to a council meeting on whether any submissions we receive prior to resolving to sell the land.

In January, the council offered the lessee a nine-month lease to expire on October 21 without another lease agreement in place the saleyards would be forced to close until a buyer could be found.

With the council in caretaker mode from August 10, it could not approve the sale until after the elections so the council resolved to extend the lease on a month by month basis.
