Council grant props up a grateful Tweed Theatre Co

TEN of Tweed's non-profit groups received their share of $13,170 on Monday as part of the council's 2013/14 budget.

Tweed Theatre Company Treasurer Rod Drummond said he was delighted for his group to be included this year.

Mr Drummond said in the 13 years since their establishment, the Tweed Theatre Company hadn't yet received any such funding.

Now, they've been given $550 - which he said would go towards safely storing props.

"It's certainly encouraging," Mr Drummond said.

"We try to give the community quality entertainment at reasonable prices."

Mr Drummond said community theatres were a great thing for young people to get involved with.

However, he said between the royalties, venue hire and public liability insurance, it can be difficult to keep them going.

Tweed mayor Barry Longland said such hard-working organisations prove Tweed is a great place to live.

"Strong charitable organisations are an indication of a caring community," Cr Longland said.

"As a council, we aim to support community life in the Tweed and the Donations Policy is one way we deliver on that project."
