Council to regulate playing fields

GOLD Coast City Council wants to closely regulate the amount of use its playing fields get, with many sporting clubs not happy.

With a winter season around the corner and following a wet summer, community services director Colette McCool said the La Nina weather pattern had created soggy conditions which would have the council forking out big bucks to repair the damage caused on the fields.

“If we don't closely regulate the amount of use the playing fields get, we face a significant repair bill at the end of the season,” Ms McCool said.

“On the other hand council has an obligation, particularly to our children, to promote life-long good health for the city's residents.

“With this in mind, council, at its meeting on April 11, resolved that all but the main playing fields remain open to junior age (16 and under) competitions, with these fields only closed in exceptional weather circumstances.”

Seniors who are over 16 years of age will be permitted to play only when fields are declared open by council.

Robina City Soccer Club vice-president Frank Renierse said the club had been having problems with the council's decision to close fields on inclement days for many years.

“We've had a problem for many years where council publishes a ‘fields are closed' notice on a blanket basis, so that anyone who checks their website, automatically takes that as read, and stays at home,” Mr Renierse said.

“As weather happens to be very localised on the coast, it very often happens that some council parks/fields are fine for training, if not for a match or two.

The council advised sports clubs who require more information to call 5581 6959.
