Councillor calls for bill support

TWEED Greens Party councillor Katie Milne has called for bipartisan support of a bill put before the Senate which would require mobile phone towers to comply with local council planning rules.

Cr Milne said mobile phone towers are "always a huge issue" when they are proposed in the Tweed, usually prompting strong community opposition.

Federal Greens leader Bob Brown last week introduced proposed legislation into the Senate which would give communities fighting mobile towers a greater say in where they are located and address concerns about their impact on health and the environment.

"Whether it's refusals from council or criticism from the community, it's always a huge issue every time a tower is proposed in the Tweed," said Cr Milne.
